What is your dosha?
Answer 18 quick questions about your body, mind and habits. Your result appears instantly. No email needed.
A dosha is one of the three energies in Ayurveda: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Together they shape your body, mind and habits. Everyone has all three in a unique mix, and your leading dosha (or doshas) is your Ayurvedic body type. The free dosha quiz above finds yours in about 3 minutes, with no email required.
What is a dosha?
Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system of India, describes everything in nature as a mix of five elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. In the body, these combine into three working energies called doshas.
- Vata (air and space) governs movement: breathing, circulation, nerve signals and the flow of thoughts.
- Pitta (fire and water) governs transformation: digestion, metabolism, body heat and sharp thinking.
- Kapha (earth and water) governs structure: strength, lubrication of the joints, stamina and calm.
You are born with your own balance of the three, called your prakriti. Think of it as a personal blueprint. Ayurveda uses it to tailor food, daily routine and herbs to you, rather than giving everyone the same advice.
How this dosha quiz works
- Part 1: your nature (18 questions). Body frame, skin, digestion, sleep, energy, mind and temperament. Answer for how you have been for most of your life, not just this week.
- Part 2: your current balance (8 optional questions). How you have felt over the last 2 to 3 weeks. This shows which dosha is raised right now.
- Your result. Your dosha type with a percentage for each dosha, what it means, and a simple plan: foods to favor, daily habits and herbs Ayurveda traditionally uses.
The quiz is free, and your result appears instantly. We do not ask for your email to show it. You can save your result as a PDF or copy a link to come back to it later.
Tip: if two answers feel equally true, pick the one that has been true for longest. If you are unsure, ask a close friend or partner. Other people often see our patterns more clearly than we do.
How to tell if you are Vata, Pitta or Kapha
Compare yourself with each column below, thinking about how you have been for most of your life rather than this week. The column that fits you best is probably your leading dosha. Most people match two columns, which makes them a dual-dosha type. The quiz above scores all of this for you.
| Vata | Pitta | Kapha | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elements | Air + space | Fire + water | Earth + water |
| Qualities | Light, dry, cold, mobile | Hot, sharp, light, oily | Heavy, slow, cool, stable |
| Typical build | Slim and light | Medium and athletic | Broad and sturdy |
| Skin and hair | Dry skin; thin, dry or frizzy hair | Warm, sensitive skin; fine hair that may grey early | Thick, smooth skin; thick, glossy hair |
| Appetite and digestion | Irregular; prone to gas and bloating | Strong; irritable if a meal is late | Steady but slow; can skip meals easily |
| Sleep | Light and easily disturbed | Moderate and sound | Deep and long; slow to wake |
| Mind at its best | Creative, quick, lively | Focused, confident, sharp | Calm, caring, steady |
| When out of balance | Worry, dry skin, poor sleep, bloating | Irritability, overheating, acidity, skin redness | Sluggishness, heaviness, congestion, oversleeping |
| Balanced by | Warmth, routine, rest, nourishing food | Coolness, moderation, play | Movement, variety, light warm food |
| Its season | Fall and early winter | Summer | Late winter and spring |
The 7 dosha types
Most people have one or two leading doshas. The quiz places you in one of seven types:
- Vata, Pitta or Kapha: one dosha clearly leads.
- Vata-Pitta: creative and driven, but needs regular meals and rest to avoid burnout.
- Vata-Kapha: creative and steady. Both doshas are cold, so warmth is key.
- Pitta-Kapha: strong, stable and ambitious. Does best with lighter meals and regular exercise.
- Tridoshic (Vata-Pitta-Kapha): all three in near-equal measure. Ayurveda considers this relatively rare. It is best balanced by following the seasons.
In a dual type, the first dosha named is the stronger one. A Pitta-Vata person leans a little more toward Pitta than Vata.
Prakriti and vikriti: your nature vs. your current state
Ayurveda separates two things. Prakriti is the mix you were born with, and it does not change. Vikriti is your current state, which shifts with the season, food, sleep, stress and age. Someone with a Kapha nature can still have Vata running high after weeks of travel and late nights.
That is why the quiz has an optional second part. If one dosha is raised right now, Ayurveda suggests calming it first, even when it is not your main dosha.
How accurate is an online dosha quiz?
A quiz is a good starting point, not a final answer. An Ayurvedic practitioner looks at much more: your pulse (nadi pariksha), tongue, health history and how your symptoms change over time. Online quizzes also depend on honest, self-aware answers, and it is easy to answer for how you feel today instead of how you have always been.
Use your result as a lens. Try the suggestions for two or three weeks and notice how you feel. If the result does not ring true, take the quiz again in a different season, or answer it together with someone who knows you well.
What to do with your result
- Read the full guide for your dosha below.
- Start with one new habit and one food change, not ten.
- Eat for the season as well as for your type.
- Check in again in a month. Your current balance can shift quickly.
Dosha quiz FAQ
What is my dosha?
Your dosha is the mix of Vata, Pitta and Kapha you were born with, which Ayurveda calls your prakriti. Most people have one or two leading doshas. The free quiz on this page estimates yours from 18 questions about your body, mind and habits.
How do I tell which dosha I am?
Compare your lifelong traits with the three doshas. Vata types tend to be slim, with dry skin, a variable appetite, light sleep and a quick, creative mind. Pitta types have a medium build, warm skin, a strong appetite and a sharp, driven mind. Kapha types have a sturdy build, smooth skin, slow and steady digestion, deep sleep and a calm nature. The easiest way is to take the free quiz above, which scores these traits for you. Most people match two doshas.
What are the three dosha types?
Vata (air and space), the energy of movement; Pitta (fire and water), the energy of digestion and metabolism; and Kapha (earth and water), the energy of structure and stability. Everyone has all three. Your mix of them decides your type.
Does everyone have a dosha?
Yes. Ayurveda holds that every person has all three doshas in their own proportion. When people talk about their dosha, they mean the one or two that lead.
How can I find my dosha for free?
Take the free dosha quiz at the top of this page. It works like a dosha calculator: 18 questions score your Vata, Pitta and Kapha and show your result instantly, with no email or sign-up. You can save your result as a PDF or copy a link to come back to it.
How long does the dosha test take?
About 3 minutes for the 18 main questions. The optional 8-question balance check adds about a minute.
What does it mean if I get two doshas?
You are a dual-dosha type, such as Vata-Pitta or Pitta-Kapha. This is very common. The first dosha named is slightly stronger. Balance whichever dosha is raised right now, and adjust for the season.
What is a tridoshic person?
Someone whose Vata, Pitta and Kapha are close to equal. Ayurveda considers this relatively rare and usually adaptable. The best guide for a tridoshic type is the season: warming in fall and early winter, lighter in late winter and spring, cooling in summer.
Can you change your dosha, or get rid of it?
In Ayurveda, your prakriti, the mix you were born with, stays the same for life, and you cannot remove a dosha: all three keep the body working. What changes is your vikriti, your current balance. Season, food, sleep, stress, travel and age can push a dosha up or down, and diet and routine bring it back.
How do I know which dosha is out of balance?
Look at what has changed over the last few weeks. Worry, poor sleep, dryness and bloating point to Vata. Irritability, overheating, acidity and skin redness point to Pitta. Heaviness, oversleeping, congestion and sluggishness point to Kapha. The optional second part of this quiz checks this for you, and each dosha guide has a free balance checker.
How do I fix a dosha imbalance?
Ayurveda balances a dosha with its opposite. Calm raised Vata with warmth, routine, rest and warm, slightly oily food. Cool raised Pitta with cooling food, moderation and real breaks. Lighten raised Kapha with daily exercise, early rising and light, spiced meals. Start with one or two changes and give them 2 to 3 weeks. See a doctor for symptoms that are strong or do not improve.
What makes a good dosha quiz?
Look for a quiz that asks about your lifelong traits separately from how you feel now, uses enough questions to be meaningful, allows dual and tridoshic results, explains what your result means, and does not hide it behind an email form. Even a good online quiz is an estimate. An Ayurvedic practitioner can assess you in person.
Is a dosha quiz a medical test?
No. It is a self-reflection tool based on traditional Ayurveda. It cannot diagnose or treat any condition. If you have a health concern, talk to a qualified doctor.
This page is for education and is based on traditional Ayurvedic principles. It is not medical advice and does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition.
